Step-By-Step Guide: Building a Sleeping Platform in F-150

Here are the materials you’ll need, as suggested by AutoDesk Instructables.

Materials:

  1. 2 – 2″x6″x104″ wood boards
  2. 2 – 3/4″ sheets of plywood
  3. 2 – Storage Underbed storage bins

Tools:

  1. Tape Measure
  2. A circular saw to cut 2x6s.
  3. Jig saw (to cut and make notches in the board)

Step 1. Measure the Bed and Cut the 2x6s

The 2x6s sit in the slots in the truck bed, and almost every truck bed has these slots. Just measure the width of your truck bed and cut three 2-by-6 beams to that length.

The best way to cut it is with a circular saw, but it doesn’t really matter how you do it, so use whatever you have. Then, put the 2x6s in the notches to make sure they fit.

Note that these notches in the front and back of some beds are little different sizes, so measure all the places you want to put a beam.

Step 2. Measure the Bed’s Corners, Cut the Plywood, and Lay it on Top of the 2×6 Beams

You don’t have to do this step because you could just cut the plywood into rectangles that fit, but then things you drop will probably fall to the bottom of the bed and be hard to get back.

Measure the part of the corner of your truck bed that sticks out the most, and cut that into the corner of the plywood.

They at the AutoDesk Instructables made these two pieces different sizes to save as much material as possible, but if they were the same size, you could stack them and get to the storage on the bottom more easily.

Step 3. Put in Storage Bins and Gear

One of the best things about a shell camper is that most of your gear can just sit in there, so you are always ready to go camping. You can just bring food and water with you and hit the road. It makes packing for a camping trip much easier!

Step 4. Add a Mattress

You can find a free and good-shaped camping trailer mattress on Craigslist. You can also buy a new one or buy a memory foam topper for the mattress.

And you are done! Ready for camping!

Is it Safe to Sleep in Your F-150 Truck?

Sleeping in your Ford F-150 truck can be safe, provided that you take certain precautions and follow some guidelines. Here are a few factors to consider:

  1. Ventilation: Ensure that your truck’s sleeping area has proper ventilation. Crack open windows or utilize a vent fan to allow fresh air circulation and prevent condensation buildup.
  2. Carbon monoxide: Never run your truck’s engine while sleeping inside. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be a serious risk if exhaust fumes enter the sleeping area. Always park in well-ventilated areas and keep the engine off.
  3. Weather conditions: Be aware of extreme weather conditions. If it’s extremely hot or cold, make necessary arrangements to regulate the temperature inside your truck. Use appropriate bedding and insulation to stay comfortable.
  4. Security: Park in safe and well-lit areas. Ensure your doors are locked and valuables are out of sight to minimize the risk of theft or intrusion.
  5. Comfort and support: Invest in a quality sleeping pad or mattress that provides adequate comfort and support. This will contribute to a better night’s sleep and reduce the risk of discomfort or back pain.
  6. Legal considerations: Check local laws and regulations regarding sleeping in vehicles. Some areas may have restrictions or guidelines on overnight parking or sleeping in public spaces.

It’s important to use your own judgment and assess the specific circumstances before deciding to sleep in your F-150 truck. If you follow safety measures, create a comfortable sleeping environment, and remain aware of your surroundings, sleeping in your truck can be a viable option for rest while on the road.

Wishing you safe camping!
